Pros

IBM Software Grouo is active in many areas of technology, so there are always interesting projects to work on. I have also discovered that it is very possible to have a great deal of freedom within IBM, provided one can demonstrate the value of what you are doing.

Cons

During the Gerstner years, there seemed to be less focus on process, audits, etc. That, sadly, has been returning lately. Also, givne the current (jan 2009) economic woes, there is a fair bit of apprehension among employees--however, I suspect that is true of almost all companies and all employees these days 8-(.

Pros

Great company to work for if you are a real knowledge-seeker and have a flair for research oriented work. The resources for trainings and professional development available in IBM are simply great and unmatchable. The facilities and guidance provided by IBM for research oriented work and patenting are also something provided by very few companies of its kind. Apart from that Ithe service portfolio that IBM's offers to its clients have almost 360 degree coverage and has something or other for almost everyone to learn and contribute. IBM's pioneering work on some of the latest technologies and industry trends and also something which takes its employees at the forefront when it comes to expertise and skills.

Cons

Too many employees, so the visibility and other benefits are not so good compared to others. Also career growth also becomes a bit slow. The compensation is though okay for the middle level employees to good at the higher ones, it's not matching with the industry for the freshers.

Pros

Structured technical career path, lots of choice, make of it what you will. IBM is a big place, experiences vary across departments; if your department is no good move! :-) Lots of information and clever people to speak to.

Cons

Big company; highly bureaucratic. People get lost inside IBM and lose their external context; IBM is a great place to work but we need to listen to our customers and act on that information. Simplify! Many customers think that if you work for IBM you know everyone and all the products; this can be a challenge.
