Pros

They have interesting projects that center around making the world a better place to live in.

Cons

Like a lot of reviewers have said, your experience really depends on your managers. I had one in particular who was awful. They could not communicate (emails would go unanswered for weeks). Work that had been done for months would not be reviewed until the last minute. It was on you to make up the lost time which was incredibly stressful. There is a huge pressure from corporate to bill hours out yet there is not enough work to be held to such a standard of productivity. I would spend weeks begging my managers for work and none of them had any to give me. If you use too much of what they call “indirect” time to make up for this you would be docked at your annual review. Turnover in my unit was horrendous due to all of these issues. The pay is terrible for both the industry and the DC area. There are no annual bonuses. If you are considering relocating to the DMV area for this position you will not be able to make it on your salary alone. The company itself likes to claim they are up there with the top consulting firms but with better values but it’s very easy to see that they are truly driven by money and company growth. They like to boast about their DEI initiatives but the company’s leadership team are all white people.

Pros

The contracts they engage in often center around meaningful development work

Cons

Poor benefits - high deductible plans cover little if anything. Their raise and promotion process lacks transparency and structure and each contract has a maximum allotment for promotions so you might be here a long time without a substantial raise or promotion. No equity adjustment is available for those who are out of the salary range for their position - and ICF said they would not initiate to move someone up into an appropriate salary range. If you're working for a contract that they keep winning every few years - chances are they didn't structure your contract for longevity and there is little professional development or opportunity to move up (or even sideways).

Pros

You get an average paycheck. The office building is nice. Parking was free. You get to eventually quit/leave, and there is professional therapy for experiences like this.

Cons

Extremely competitive and backstabbing environment. Expected to do some work under non-billable hours without the ability to charge to overhead or make up the time. My work was constantly presented as that of my supervisor (and applauded) while everyone new and no one cared (or were too scared to acknowledge it publicly). My supervisor repeatedly made ethnically disparaging remarks and harassed me. Although I complained to HR and had witnesses it wasn’t further investigated and dismissed as a communication issue. Once I complained, my manager’s excellent reviews of my performance turned into performance warnings without evidence/examples. After spending over a year documenting and presenting additional evidence of the harassment, verbal abuse, and unsubstantiated negative feedback I endured, my request to be moved to a different manager was given (and the mysteriously manager left). They care only about their bottom and don’t blink or acknowledge unethical treatment or actions by upper management. Worst management and work experience ever! If you are lucky, you may land under one of the very few departments and managers that are ok.
