Pros

Unlimited PTO, Pay is decent, lots of free snacks and meals.

Cons

Jeez, where do I start? The 3D printers, so called “robots” don’t work. The employees are working 10x harder than the robots and literally FORCING the robots to work. Constantly breaks down and needs repair 80% of the time. Cement constantly clogging the machines, hardware breaks daily, and design gets worse and worse. You can find a more reliable printer on Amazon. Company has very high turnover on all levels. Some common issues such as lack of leader, broken processes, unclear direction, and if you work outside of the office, it’s very labor intensive and dirty. None of the leaders here are tactical nor strategic. They can only see what’s in front of time. For some time, my manager didn’t even know who he reported to or get clear answers from HR on performance evals. CEO sends out videos telling employees they need to do whatever it takes to make certain projects work, otherwise company could go down hill. Only reasons why projects are even getting completed is because headcount and lots of money is being thrown at it. Nothing has been profitable so far and it looks as if nobody knows how to run a simple budget book. NASA contract? To the moon? The team leading this has had ZERO progress and is being led by either new grads or construction workers who probably know nothing tighter than a 1/8” tolerance. STAY CLEAR! Icons projects take much longer and requires more efforts compared to traditional construction. There are other companies out there that are much more advanced than Icon

Pros

Start up life and good technical team coworkers

Cons

Start up life. Poor leadership that is out of their depth. The company concept is cool, but it really doesn't make sense it's a solution looking for a problem. The problem with housing will not be solved by 3d printing ugly and inefficient concrete oven houses. Poor decision making and high cash burn rate has led to massive layoffs, but poor management means they are now looking for more execs to fill the gap. Probably only a year or so left and this company will go under

Pros

The mission of ICON is great. The worker bees are all very kind, diverse and helpful. Salary comp is good for a startup (no bonus or 401k match). Convenient location in Austin.

Cons

My interview process was long (~2.5-3 months) with very little transparency or communication from HR or the hiring team. ICON does a brilliant job of marketing themselves, especially to the local Austin community. However, in our department (and certainly not every team is the same), we put so much emphasis on design that it takes away from actually shipping usable tools, learning, and iterating. Nearly every new idea/feature/etc requires months of meetings, agreeing, research and more research, then only approval of certain teammates will mean the ideas sees the light of day. Sadly, ICON is one of the worst leadership experiences I've had in my career. As a senior IC, I came hoping to learn from leadership and to grow. Most on the leadership team are in their role for the first time, so you will get no coaching. There is no training programs to move up or change internally, nor is there continuing education encouraged except OSHA (10 hours+) even if you have an office desk. For some Some of the ICONics who have been at the company for a very long time create a cringy culture. At times they make it feel exclusive and certainly not collaborative. Some leaders are given exceptions for judgmental and borderline insulting behavior.
