Pros

Overall, the IRS is a very good place to work. I did a lot of forensic accounting/litigation support before going into management. The field experience and training is very good. Great work/life balance. With so many specialties, you can always finds an interesting position to apply for if you get bored.

Cons

You're not going to get rich. Experienced agent's, front line managers make b/w 100 and 130. Senior mgt a little more. Senior managers are usually the agents who were poor auditors and/or could not handle the field, so dealing with them on technical issues becomes very frustrating.

Pros

Good Pay and Good Benefits

Cons

Only worked for one month. Successfully completed a six month training program for this position with Lions World Services for the Blind school in Little Rock, AR which is apart of the IRS. Which was a horrible experience. At the beginning of the program the school informed that the training material would copied on a disk for future reference. At the end of the program the school would not allow the material to be copied. Could not perform the detailed and complex job task without the training material. IRS also stated that training material is not allowed to perform job task. I do not know what the training procedure is for a person hired off the street, but I was informed that I was being treated the same as everyone else even though I was constantly referred to as a VI which means visually impaired.

Pros

Great benefits. Great pay. Some opportunity for overtime. Air-conditioned office setting (always helps). Longevity guarantees the best work schedules, promotional potential in-house or other agencies, etc. Partial payment of tuition (per semester) after one year of work completed.

Cons

Some of the best paid jobs are still right here in our backyards. Federal jobs are well-paid and no one can contest with the health benefits it offers. Especially if you work for the United States Postal Service. But what is really the price to pay for having job security? Should they be allowed to disregard the voices of the employees? Think about what truly makes you happy at work (besides the money)! Is it really worth it to be abused and belittled by the angry public, seeking to take out the anguish and frustration of tax season out on you? Is it really worth it to have to pick up the sewage inexperienced tax preparers leave on unsuspecting taxpayer returns? I guess you can decide.
