Pros

good retirement benefits; retirement plan matches upto approx 4%, work car provided and gas paid for; travel all over the country; compensation is pretty good; get all the holidays off; you can roll over your sick hours to the following year and roll over vacation time upto 240hrs to the following year. can retire at 25 years of service before the age of 50 or 20yrs in service at 50.

Cons

not a lot of perks like private sectors; being watched at all times because you work for the public; cases take long to finish; a lot of paperwork to to get something done.

Pros

Working for the IRS offers an incredible opportunity to showcase your ability to achieve success while having to overcome a 'negative' public perception.

Cons

Well, it is the IRS afterall! But seriously, the downside has to be the ever changing shift in priorities as you transition from one administration to another. Many programs and projects never really receive a fair chance to develop and prosper.

Pros

There are some benefits to working for the IRS. You have all of the government holidays, TSP (the government's version of the 401K), and the management is pretty cool. Also, they provide a pretty fair amount of classroom learning so you can learn (or pretend to learn) the tax law that might relate to your job. Also, it seemed standard practice to bump entering revenue officers from GS-7 to GS-9 after the first year--which was about a 30% raise.

Cons

There's a certain look people get when you tell them you work for the IRS. It's a cross between pain and pity, and was never a pretty sight. If you can get over that, you'll have to still stomach the amazingly low starting pay (especially in Southern California). I had to knock on many taxpayers doors, put up with many unhappy phone calls, people crying to me, etc. I still have bad dreams where I relive some of this stuff. But then some people like this stuff; I didn't.
