Pros

Stability. Once you’re hired it’s hard to loose your job.

Cons

No room for advancement, favoritism. Upper management has no clue of what’s going on with the actual work. Upper management needs professional training to be able to TRAIN managers. Employees come to work dressed like their just getting out of bed or going to a strip club. Employees curl their hair, put on makeup, fake lashes etc at their desk. You wouldn’t think this is a “ Good Government Job”.

Pros

Nice, smart people. Dedicated, passionate about serving taxpayers. Great benefits. Flexible work schedules/locations helpful if you have kids, live in a densely populated area or need quiet, secluded environment to research complicated cases.

Cons

Insufficient budget will impact every aspect of your work. Short staffed, case overload. Technology and infrastructure archaic. Lack of tools to do job well. IT and Business leadership adversarial vs collaborative - with both employees and taxpayers paying the cost in poor service and support. Mentality by most leaders was that if you haven't spent your career in the IRS, you don't equally deserve promotions, leadership opportunities, awards as others who have. Manifested in a great deal of nepotism/cronyism. Lack of awareness between field offices and headquarters. Judgmental, punitive culture. Lack of empathy, compassion for employees. Heavy emphasis on process and policy. You will be audited every year and cannot make any mistakes on your own taxes. Period. No life event or honest error will exempt you.
