Pros

There is some value in learning how things work at the IRS if you want to use your experience there to give you an advantage in working outside, representing taxpayers.

Cons

Extremely high pressure to complete cases - the IRS is trying to do 100% of the workload with 75% of the personnel needed. If you want to work outside, you'd better get trained in Microsoft Office, Peachtree etc because you won't get that there.

Pros

IRS isn't just a job, it's like a Big Family! I was first hired in 1989 and after having my first child and suddenly becoming a single mother, they worked with me as a seasonal employee and made it so I was rehirable....25 years later I was hired back, and then got hired as a permanent employee. Great flexibility, and awesome management, and Union workers.

Cons

PROBLEMS with a certain Manager who approved my FMLA, but then I applied for a Leave of Abscense, there was a lot of misunderstandings and my head boss called me over a conference call and said they looked forward to me coming back to work. But when I arrived, I was actually told I would only be able to work as a seasonal employee. It made a big mess with unemployment and then I was actually told I collected to much unemployment because I wasn't on furlough status. So be careful if things get really complicated, ask someone who is on your side.

Pros

40 hour flexible work weeks and great benefits. Can work from home as needed.

Cons

Upward mobility is a joke unless you live in a major city/Washington DC.
