Pros

Generally a good place to work. Most of my supervisors throughout my career have been great to work with. Most employees enjoy the work that we do and take the concept of public trust to heart in all that we do.

Cons

Public opinion IRS is not good because of the small few. Tax laws are confusing and many we don't agree with but Congress passes the laws, we just administer them. Smaller budgets every year and employee retirements are making it tough. We have been pushed to do more with less for years. The best way lower taxes is to beef up enforcement to ensure that everyone pays their fair share.

Pros

Good team atmosphere, easy to be excepted. Understanding staff. Definitely teaches you the skill of learning to adapt and change at any given moment.

Cons

For seasonal employee's, which are many, it is almost impossible to land a permanent year round position. Not flexibility as to when you start or you leave. Often thrown into work that you have no knowledge of.

Pros

You don't have to worry much about job security--there will always be an IRS, and, it is very unlikely that you get fired.

Cons

The amount bureaucracy is amazing. To get anything done requires so much time and so many people to approve it. And if it is computer related, it also often involves incompetent technical support people, who give wildly different answers to the same questions. The reason - see my "pro"--incompetent is not a fireable offense at the IRS.
