Pros

Roth TSP option is a phenomenal benefit, three weeks vacation time after 3 years, generous sick leave, option to telework between 3 days a week. If you work hard, there's potential to do influential, meaningful work

Cons

Government efficiency, ROAD (Retired on Active Duty) employees, difficult to get a promotion if you're a midlevel (GS-11/12) worker in the DC region. If you don't work hard (and nothing, including management direction or incentives compels you to), then days can drag.

Pros

Good work-life balance. 40 hour work week max. Telecommuting (work from home) option. No dress code. Allowed to work independently. Allowed to create and control your own schedule. Guaranteed to move to Grade 11 without competition. Don't be intimidated by the job title - this job does not require a lot of accounting knowledge, even someone with just a high school education can do this job.

Cons

The SBSE (Small Business Self-Employed Div.) Revenue Agent position is an entry-level position in the IRS. There is not much to learn in this position after 3 years - mainly tedious paperwork/procedures and lots of writing that no one ever reads. You will be expected to audit a wide range of businesses without any "real world" auditing training. Case closure and time on cases trumps quality audits. Managers are often clueless as to what the job entails. This organization also tends to harbor individuals with poor social skills and possible mental illness who oftentimes end up in management. Try to position yourself to work in other departments in the IRS besides SBSE field exam.
