Great knowledge of the Inside, Poor Leadership
Pros
If you want to gain a good grasp of the internal processes within the IRS, then there is no better place. In my tenor working for the IRS, I had an outstanding rating. Reason for leaving - Opportunities
Cons
Unfortunately, room for growth is limited, budgets are constrained, very cut throat atmosphere because everyone is looking to get a raise and everyone is also aware that promotional opportunities are few and far in between. My suggestion to anyone really considering the IRS, is get in and get out.. but don't stay long unless you want to get stuck. As far as leadership, really depends on which territory you're in. Unfortunately, in NJ leadership is poor, based on what I can tell. The people at the top only look at results, because very few if any come up from the rankings and understand what happens at the operational level. Everyone is trying to do their job with their hands tied behind their back, and so the mandate is to do more with less resources and the bar has been raised so high, thats its almost impossible to get ahead. Growth opportunities are not based on merit.
