Pros

there are no pros to working here

Cons

This place is the pits. Every review about this place is accurate. With many federal jobs, the job is what you make. The IRS is the type of agency where an employee can keep their nose clean, head down, perform AND still be subject to ridicule, abuse, harassment, disrespect and even termination. I worked for another agency before this one and there was rampant politics, power tripping managers, favoritism and nepotism, but the IRS' culture took the cake. It is the worst agency to work for. You will hear stories about the VA, SSA, DHS agencies, but they are nothing like this place. If offered a position here: RUN!!!! It pretends to be something that it is not: it is unprofessional, a hostile work environment, there is extreme favoritism, nepotism (many of my co-workers were married to other ROs or personnel in other departments), coercive, abusive, stressful, inflexible, and filled with idiots in management. During orientation for instance, a peer of mine received brownie points with management for asking stupid questions that were self-explanatory and clear because we had STEP by STEP instructions in our training manuals and web courses. Because management liked him, we kept being coerced into asking questions when none us had any. He would undermine others, over talk others and try to make you look stupid. The manager and OJI permitted this type of behavior. I considered quitting at least 50 times within the first week of being with the IRS. The behavior I witnessed was totally unacceptable. This is worst than the 2-3 months hazing that you receive in other federal agencies. Everyday I had a headache and cried because I had to return to this horrible agency. The job is not even that hard! It is the people. With all federal agencies where the positions begin at a 7/9, there will be a learning curve for most employees. You are either going to have use the law, agency policies and procedures to screen, develop, research, process, code, and develop cases and with effective management and training you will be successful at doing so. This place is not like that.

Pros

Very nice people, great hours, paid training program.

Cons

Short lunch hour, training provided didn't match job expectation. Management didn't fully communicate daily changes or assist with training in any manner. Be comfortable with entire call and computer keystrokes recorded and reviewed. Due to budget constraints, this years training started late and was several days short complete, leaving new hires to feel completely on their own. Difficult or unique calls that required assistance/training were dealt with inconsistently depending on your manager/lead.

Pros

The organization offers stable employment and great benefits. After surviving 10+ years in public accounting, the pace and sense of urgency was, and continues to be, a culture shock. Compensation overall (including benefits, number of hours worked amongst other factors) exceeds what the private sector is currently able to offer given the state of the labor market. You will have plenty of time to address whatever you have outside of the office.

Cons

There is little incentive to try to excel. Lower level management (they call it front line) can treat employees with the impunity. In NYC, the union plays a major role in the dynamics of the workplace, keeping management in check. There are too many folks who have been there 20+ years that have little or weak background in tax law. More so than usual, promotions come to those who are liked, and are yes men but are not necessarily competent. Administrative burden can be overwhelming to the point that you wonder if you function is to challenge taxpayers or complete paper work. After you stay too long, It can be difficult to leave, although this might not necessarily be a bad thing depending on your situation.
