Pros

Meaningful work as a revenue agent and always learning new things. Benefits are good and pay is good with just a bachelor's degree. However higher accreditation, CPA or MS in tax, can earn more in the private sector. Good benefits but that may change with future legislation. Forty hour work weeks. Teleworking and flexible start and end times are also great.

Cons

Technology is out of date. Change comes very slowly. Public perception of IRS employees is generally very negative and you face this daily as a revenue agent. Budget constraints.

Pros

If you like helping people this is a great place to work.Great benefits and retirement plan.Above average pay if you lack a college education.

Cons

Management wants you to think "in the box" hand-cuffing you with policies and procedures. Also, they keep track of your break and lunch times and spend half of your meetings discussing it. Spend more time on teaching the business and research shortcuts. Job should pay 75k -85k minimum, not even close.Budget cuts are maddening and prevent solid workers from moving up.Union protects the weak and keeps the agency from getting rid of poor performers.
