Pros

Everyone is impressed when you tell them where you work

Cons

This place is ridiculously toxic. I left here several months ago, but still have the distinct privilege to hear how miserable and how horrible this place is every time I talk to anyone that works there. It makes it challenging hanging out with anyone that I know that still works there, because they are just so really unhappy.

Pros

-Illumina has lots of smart and talented people. -Nice gym and facilities. -Decent benefits (salary, 401k, health, etc.) -Good "brand" name recognition on CV -Industry leader in whole genome sequencing and a strong array business

Cons

Illumina was a great place to work.... for awhile. Unfortunately, their market dominance and arrogance has caused them to expand too rapidly and has left them seriously vulnerable to outside competitors. Internally, the place is in shambles in regards to organization, GIS, and overall direction. Are they clinical or research? Too many chiefs and not enough indians is a general rule of thumb at Illumina. Middle-management is bloated and decision making was painful and slow. Cross communication between groups was very secretive and office politics galore.

Executive dysfunction

Pros

My immediate coworkers were a smart, driven group. Work was interesting and despite the hectic pace and poor direction for our high-level executives, everyone was on the same team and pushing to deliver great products in aggressive timelines. I have made lifelong friends here, and the quality of my coworkers was outstanding.

Cons

Executive management is running this company into the ground. Moronic acquisition attempts lead to layoffs, "optimistic" earnings estimates that borderline on fantasy all leading to friction when the situation meets reality. Watching the upper echelons blindly fumble through their days while handwaving real issues such as employee compensation and retention was painful. Constantly missed bonus payouts despite crunch time to accommodate poorly managed projects was the norm.
