Pros

Work life balance can't be beat. Summer & winter shutdowns, unlimited FTO and remote hybrid schedule are the only things keeping me here

Cons

Company slashes benefits, goes through multiple rounds of layoffs, offers bare minimum merit increases, delays promotions all in the name of cost savings, but feels it is appropriate to give each VP a $200k bonus. You read that right. $200k EACH.

Pros

Good campus, Food trucks, generally good coworkers, many vacation days , FTO is more cost savings than pro employees though, impacting human health

Cons

Previous reviewers have covered the poor pay. Will cover some deltas. Engr 1 at San Diego pays 85 k Illumina pays 65k Eng 2 is 100k illumina pays 85k Sr engineer is 120k at competitors Illumina is at 100k Staff is 160k at competitors Illumina pays 130k Sr staff is 180k at dexcom Illumina pays 155k Illumina bonus is not paid every year even if company makes record profit. It is only 10 percent at sr staff level. Other companies are in 15 to 20 percent. Illumina stock grant is better than pharma company but laughably low compared to tech and semiconductor companies. Illumina has said they will do salary adjustment from below median to median..which means people who are at median and underpaid will have to find jobs elsewhere. This is reflected in huge attrition with everyone looking for exit and the morale is down. Normal raise is 3 percent. Promotion is around 5 percent if ur median and 15 percent if you are underpaid already. You will still be underpaid.

Pros

Intelligent, motivated people Amazing mission and life changing products Future growth Benefits are good

Cons

It pains me to write this review but I felt I had to after being at the company >1 yr. My experience is more in the Oncology space but I’ve witnessed/experienced burnout like I’ve never felt before. The expectations for being “on” and connected are ridiculous. I’ve worked 50-80+ hour weeks consistently, working early mornings, late nights, always Sunday’s and recently while out of office. There are serious under staffing problems in some groups more than others, but overall, no one wants to speak out and speak up or if they are they are not being taken seriously. The vibe I get from higher ups/ leadership is that they’re working just as hard so you should too. I’ve never met more people who apparently don’t care about their own personal lives and freedom? It boggles my mind. The workloads are not sustainable and expectations sky high. There’s also no celebrating! Illumina does not embrace work hard play hard, compared to what I’ve experienced elsewhere. The people are wonderful but the culture needs some serious introspection if they want to avoid turnover like they’ve experienced over the last few years.
