Pros

As a doctoral student, once you work as an associate instructor (i.e., AI), you will earn experience in designing the course syllabus, materials and leading the whole class instead of only being a teaching assistant.

Cons

The pay is too low for living ($850/month).

Pros

Benefits: Time off - 30 + days a year, Health Insurance Supportive coworkers in department (though not in every dept.) Beautiful campus

Cons

Below market salaries even compared to other public colleges/universities in the state Inconsistent management and lack of employee development No way to advance except to leave or change departments (and then with minimal or no salary increase) HR structure is archaic (e.g. no steps in levels) and inflexible Lack of collaboration among departments "us vs them" attitude High turnover in support positions (the deadwood stay, the best and brightest leave quickly)

Pros

Almost every professor is easy work with when teaching a course. They understand your work load as a graduate student and often make your teaching job more pleasant.

Cons

Teaching a smaller lab class can be bothersome with limited resources to keep up equipment. It was especially difficult working with electronics equipment because many of the components were broken.
