Pros

- IU is a terrific university and extremely important to the state of Indiana. - Bloomington is one of the very best college towns in the country. Lots to do and the people generally are wonderful - The staff colleagues are a close-knit group and the day-to-day work environment is positive. - The benefits are outstanding. A lot of vacation time, good health care coverage, generous retirement.

Cons

- The president is an ego-driven autocrat who cares more about his legacy than the long-term success of the university. He provides little actual leadership and is more concerned that he get credit for IU's success and that he get to do what interests him (such as international travel) than doing the hard work to push the university forward. - Faculty morale is low and the university is losing good people as result of a general feeling that administration doesn't care as much about the scholarly mission of the university as it does about erecting new buildings. Academic changes are forced upon faculty with little chance for input and without necessary resources to make them work properly. - Upward mobility is limited because succession planning is non-existent. - Too much time is spent pursuing work that isn't critical to the university's mission.

Pros

The faculty and professional staff include many wonderful, dedicated people. The surrounding community (at least in Bloomington) is special. In many departments, this is a great place to work. The university is an accepting place for many kinds of individuals.

Cons

Bureaucracy can be crushing at times. The current president is out of touch, extravagant and ego-driven. At higher-levels the pay for similar jobs can vary widely. Aside from an excellent provost, too few women have reached high ranks within the university.
