Pros

Dogs wandering the office, free coffee, casual dress, located in beautiful Vermont, near the Green Goddess Cafe, not too much overtime, brilliant people at the lowest rungs of the company, did I mention dogs?

Cons

Dumpy building, far from major population centers, stuffy air, open seating plan, nothing fun about the office, humor is absent, management/employee disconnect, unimpressive salaries, no appreciation, no advancement, the smartest are not in the driver's seats, scratching my head wondering how some people got their positions.

Pros

Good overall compensation. Work-life balance. Casual dress-code and relaxed work environment.

Cons

Where to begin. Starting at the beginning of 2019 Inntopia had significant layoffs followed by a steady stream of high-profile individuals leaving the company. Our salaries were frozen, and during that time period our CTO left as well as ~60% of the technical leads in the company. Then, near the end of 2019 they laid off the new CTO and as well as the entire project management team. I suspect there would have been further layoffs had so many people not chosen to leave voluntarily over the course of 2019. The core product is rooted in architecture that was developed in the early 2000s. While it works for its original purpose, it is extremely brittle, so even minor changes have the tendency to break and require significant refactoring. As a result of the antiquated architecture, engineers working for the company don’t learn marketable technical skills. A number of our most talented developers left for that reason. The real work that would have modernized the system was consistently deprioritized to work on various, seemingly random, customer priorities which only added to the overall unwieldiness of the system. The engineering managers at Inntopia all had critical flaw(s) that prevented them from being effective. One did technical work so long ago they thought screen-scraping was fine. Another had good ideas but literally took months to execute on things as simple as putting up chalkboard paint. Another had no understanding whatsoever regarding the technical aspects of the work that the people they supervised were performing. All treated Agile development methodology as a cargo cult and seemed willing to ignore that roughly half the teams made no progress in any given two-week interval.

Pros

Working at Inntopia has been a terrific experience. The people are friendly and very competent - a trait not found at most companies! Everyone is very willing to pitch in anywhere they can and answer any question or research or point you in the right direction of they don't immediately have the answer. The company is growing very fast and is well positioned in the market to really take off. There are a great deal of architectural changes and new features being added to the system so it is a great opportunity for a software developer to really get their hands dirty rather than just keeping a system going. The management is very accessible, transparent, intelligent, and supportive. They understand the work required to get stuff done so they are able to set reasonable expectations and open to employee input. The company is expanding and opening an office in Burlington which will give employers more options if they do not wish to commute, and the dogs are a big plus!

Cons

Small, flat organization, so while there are not many opportunities to get promotions employees and take on new roles and advance themselves in other ways.
