Nurses beware…no support and huge liability issues.
Pros
Loved most of the employees and felt appreciated by the hourly workers.
Cons
Administration views the OHN as a requirement to fulfill OSHA standard. Pressure is placed on the OHN to keep injuries from becoming recordable. Liability risk for the Nurse is huge. Expected to be on call 24/7 for injuries but pay is salary with no call pay or overtime. Some mills obviously are worse than others but many of them had similar experiences. No clinical oversight so the RN is the highest licensed provider onsite. And many of the mills only have one RN per 400+ employees. Some mills contract basic EMT’s for security positions and they can respond to emergencies along with the Nurse but they do not have any regular duties to lighten the load on daily operations in the Occ Health Department.
