The reality of working at IH

Pros

The IH of today is very different than it was 2 years ago. And that's a good thing, it means that the org is able to evolve to accommodate the needs of customers, to maintain relevance in the market, and to show up for employees in the ways that matter to them. For folks who join IH in 2025 and beyond, the foundation of the company is much stronger than it has ever been, and it is because a committed team of senior leaders were willing to have the hard conversations about what the org needed to prioritize in order to succeed and to make the hard decisions that came along with those priorities. As a consequence, the organization is now focused on one #1 priority: powering the acceleration of research to transform patient outcomes. Personally, that meant that my scope changed and some of the work that I found intellectually interesting was deprioritized. At the time, that didn't feel great . But, when I take a step back and think about what the company needs to focus on to be successful, I know it was the right decision. I'm not alone in experiencing this, nor am I alone in receiving support from the organization in order to navigate these changes smoothly. Growing with a start-up can be uncomfortable and challenging, but it also comes with opportunities to learn and evolve in ways you might not elsewhere. Lastly, I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge all of the people who show up every day to help IH achieve its goals. We have a team of fantastic folks who set a high bar and care about each other.

Cons

We are in a critical phase at IH where we need to be focused on delivering real, near-term value and making the right bets. We have gotten much better at avoiding distractions, but we aren't perfect at it and if you are the sort of person who excels at prioritizing, we would certainly benefit from having you on the team. In order to stand out at IH, you'll find yourself putting in more than 40 hours/week. And it isn't just about putting in the time, it is also about demonstrating a real commitment and passion not only for the mission but for learning about and committing to what the business needs. If you're not in the right place in your life to be able to / willing to put in that type of effort, IH may not be the right place for you. That doesn't mean that IH is a bad place to work, or that you won't be a great employee elsewhere, but it is the reality of working at IH and worth understanding ahead of joining the team.
