Pros

It is a good company that takes pretty good care of their employees. The management at the plant level was good to work with and all worked pretty well together. When I was there everyone wanted to do a good job and everyone worked pretty well together to accomplish the overall goals of the plant.

Cons

Working in a factory gets a little monotonous. The extreme heat and cold temperatures make it uncomfortable in the winter and the summer months. Being a private company we were left out of the loop on a lot of information that we would have been notified of if the company was public and had to disclose.

Recession has hit hard

Pros

JELD-WEN is a large employer (over 20,000), and offers a solid benefits package that include full health, dental, and vision. As a manager the opportunities to change jobs within the company or be promoted are fairly often. I have moved (by choice) 3 times in just as many years to advance myself. There is a good mix of experience and young talent at almost every facility.

Cons

The recent recession has hit hard and incentives and bonuses for all management have been virtually eliminated. The low starting salary for managers makes this change even more difficult. JELD-WEN is a private company and does not share financial details even with most managers. Many companies offer training conducted by outside companies in categories like safety, leadership, job skills, etc. JELD-WEN relies almost solely on training conducted within the company, and in some areas it can feel like the blind leading the blind.

Pros

career oportunities seem relatively good if you spend a decent amount of time with the company; go getters are often rewarded with promotions when positions open up. Communication is fair. Certain issues are not communicated well, and there is a break down of issues on the plant floor occasionally due to failure to communicate. The comp & benefits the company offer are exactly what I would expect from any large-scale company. I wouldn't say they go above and beyond necessarily, but they also aren't particularly lacking. A relatively fair & respectable company.

Cons

Career opportunities within the company seem to have frozen for the moment, along with much of the US economy; Employee morale at my plant seems to be fairly low amongst hourly-paid employees and lower level management. This is likely due to often long hours, and unscheduled saturdays frequently deemed mandatory with very little notice, but the pay is adequate, and makes up for part of this. Recognition & feedback is often lacking, unless the plant is performing badly.
