Low pay for front line staff. Little to no support. Poor executive leadership
Pros
The care and concern for their students is in large part due to their wonderful Student Life Department and associated staff, as well as ALL front line staff members in student services departments, and also some really fantastic faculty members. Sadly, it has little to do with University Leadership. Amazing work family! I was able to meet some really super kids and their families. The biggest benefit of my 16+ years working at JU was the intrinsically beneficial goodness I felt watching a young adult walk across that graduation stage knowing I had a part (albeit small) in getting them there.
Cons
They DO NOT support their staff. Plain and simple. They expect the world from you, but pay you next to nothing. There is no advancement. I can count on one hand the number of annual increases I received (despite stellar evaluations), because the money and spending is so poorly managed. They dangle carrots, give you vacation and time off, and offer free tuition for you and your family members - but that is how they get you. After giving 16+ years of my time, talent, and treasure (I started a scholarship program, made donations, even paid off students' accounts), I received NOTHING from JU in return. JU retaliated against me, and they know it. I could give 100+ examples, and not enough time to list them! I know the history and "where all the bodies are buried." The entire work environment is TOXIC. Don't believe a thing Exec Leadership says. Even now 4 years later, conditions are just as bad, if not worse, for front line staff. I won't ever set foot on this campus again, I will never send my kids here. There is zero transparency on the part of Executive Leadership with how money is actually spent; how scholarships are actually awarded; what discounts are actually given, etc. It is a crap shoot every summer whether or not staff even get paid, if it wasn't for the federal student loan funds they receive. Don't work here; it is simply not worth it!
