Pros

Great benefits, great culture, competitive pay

Cons

Mike Thomas, CEO and Lisa Foust, Chief People & Engagement Office (basically HR) notified the entire home health department that the department was sold to a private company and all employees will lose their jobs with John Muir Health. This came as a surprise because the CEO Mike Thomas sent an explicit email denying regarding rumors that the home health department is being shopped around a few months prior. This is viewed a blatant lie as this deal did not materialize over night. The employees feel as if this is retaliation for unionizing, obviously not something we can prove though. The HR representative Lisa Foust stated in the meeting "in lieu of a severance package we're giving you a 60 day notice". The company that is taking over has sub par pay and benefits that are not competitive for the area. This was a slap in the face as many of the employees have been working there for decades. I had been completely happy working for John Muir until this occurred.

John Muir Health Response

Dear Employee: Thank you for expressing your thoughts and concerns. John Muir Health welcomes and encourages employee feedback. We greatly value the work you have done on behalf of John Muir Health and the work we hope that you will continue to support local patients and families in our community. To maintain our short and long-term ability to fulfill our mission and serve the community, we must sometimes make difficult decisions, like the one to end the management and operation of our home health service at the end of 2023. Cornerstone, the company that will own and manage home health services as of January 1, 2024, has stressed its respect for the capability and professionalism of John Muir Home Health employees and has encouraged them to apply for positions with the new company. We believe that individuals ultimately employed by the new company ) will have robust opportunities for professional development and career advancement. We do want to clarify a couple of points. There was not an email from Mike Thomas denying rumors of a possible Home Health sale. We wrote in July to employees in response to a question about these rumors that: “As an independent, not-for-profit health system, John Muir Health has a duty to operate in the best interest of the communities it serves and continuously examine opportunities to maintain sustainability and be good stewards of resources.” In terms of severance, if you apply for an open position listed by Cornerstone by their independently established deadline, and do not receive an offer, you will be eligible to receive a severance package in accordance with John Muir Health severance guidelines. The 60-day notice that you reference is required by state and federal law since you will no longer be employed by John Muir Health at the end of the year. If you have additional questions related to your current employment by John Muir Health, please reach out to our Human Resources department. We would be glad to assist you.
