Frequent Layoffs is Problematic

Pros

Traditional salaries and benefits offered with many choices (although medical benefits are expensive). Good career growth prospects as they do often promote from within. Don't have unrealistic expectations on amount of work required and employees can usually work remotely.

Cons

Job insecurity as they have one to two rounds of layoffs every year and often replace longterm employees with contractors. Frequently making decisions to save money leaving the impression that profit rather than providing quality education or helping improve employees' situation is paramount. Seem to prefer very young, right-out-of-college candidates when hiring, presumably to save money, but creating a lack of age diversity in staff.

Run Away!

Business Outlook

Pros

Easier classroom management and way less bullying than at brick-and-mortar schools; can wear whatever you want from the waist down (jeans, shorts, flip-flops)

Cons

WAY OVERLOADED with number of students assigned to you (try at least 30-35 IEPs while also being in class and in meetings for the majority of the day); most sped teachers at FLCCA will tell you they work anywhere from 10-18 hrs PER DAY and 8 on weekends and are still drowning. Most of them beg for more time to help their students with special needs, yet the administration refuses to egg knowledge their need for more time and instead load them up with more students. So many great teachers special Ed and regular Ed have left this company due to being used and abused!

A great company hamstrung by poor middle-management

Pros

- Amazing people with a true love for students - A great mixture of educators and business folk - Handles the balance of a for-profit company in the non-profit sector very well - Has no tolerance for anything illegal or misleading - Top leadership is experienced and respected in the field of education

Cons

- They've lost their innovative edge over the years - There is a tendency to apply solutions without fully understanding the problems - In an attempt to be agile, there's often not enough time provided to fully try out and implement new ideas - Experience and institutional knowledge is no longer valued or respected - Yearly (sometimes more often) reorganizations prevent consistency in programing and progress - When ending employment due to a reorg, there was zero appreciation given to me for my accomplishments during more than a decade of service
