Pros

Connection to an inspiring movement, ability to make a difference. Many opportunities to learn about education reform, and understand the landscape. KIPP is a premier brand for resume.

Cons

Disconnection to teachers and on the ground reality. Sometimes there is red tape and you wonder if the work you are doing is removing obstacles for teachers and principals, or enhancing their work.

Pros

- Very mission-oriented. - Proven to be impactful in the communities it serves. If you want to work at an ed org that is at the forefront of ed reform, then KIPP is a good fit. - Generally very friendly, talented people.

Cons

- Not much leeway for career growth for entry-level/associate positions. - Professional development is lacking (as it is in most nonprofits).

Pros

There is allot of parent involvement which enables positive performance academically.

Cons

Hours are too long for an elementary child (7:45am-4:00pm). Discipline on children this age range is way too rigid. Lack of physical activity. Children have only two 20 minute breaks if lucky. There is documented evidence that proves these 20 minutes of playtime is less. Many children are deprived of recess as disciplinary punishment. There is no PE. This is not healthy for children. Management is very close-minded and unprofessional. When an issue or concern comes up they always say the same thing "this is a school of choice" "KIPP will not change any policies". In other words "these are our rules take it or leave". They almost seem robot-like as if they have been programmed. Needless to say, after an issue is brought up to leadership, they will not be as friendly as before. Very unprofessional.
