Pros

Almost no pros. They treat their staff at all levels like garbage.

Cons

Where to begin? Make a mistake and get fired. Saw it over and over. There is no counseling only terminations or they blast people so bad they quit without notice in the middle of a school year. I saw people leave for less money just to make a quick escape. They destroy any sense of loyalty by smashing the spirits of the teachers and even the staff. They are also a dismal failure in the schools themselves. They have been in business for years in Memphis and still less than 15% of the students have mastered ANYTHING at grade level. Think about it. 85% of the students are behind (most of them significantly so).

Pros

High pay relative to Shelby County Schools Solid Coaching within the school Motivated and passionate teachers

Cons

- Schools hours that are extended (2 hours longer than normal) which leads to burnout of students and teachers - School culture that emphasizes compliance over joy and academic learning - Students are not bought into the KIPP character traits, so it ends up not being a meaningful part of the school culture - Little space to let students be kids--"high expectations" leads to an oppressive culture for both teachers and students; No recess or outlet for kids - This is not a school where it is easy to balance having a family--the hours are too long and the workload is too high - High tolerance for disrespect and disruptive behavior

Pros

I love the high energy and positivity of the place. KIPP schools are full of culture, school pride and love of learning. There are many opportunities to grow professionally with PD meetings every week and full day PD once a month. We work hard to teach scholars the facts of life and help them to overcome challenges they may face because of their troubled surroundings. I truly believe that there is a great impact made by KIPP schools in the lives of kids who need a little more love.

Cons

There can be an imbalance between work and home life as work hours are many.
