Pros

Great people are working for Kaplan--young, bright, energetic, hardworking, dedicated. There is a lot of autonomy at the center level, so it's a good place to learn decision making, balancing customer wants with company wants, etc. At the entry level, you will probably have more responsibility than people in other entry level jobs, and the scope of responsibility can expand very quickly. Very little chance of getting fired. Sense that you are helping people reach goals they have set for themselves can be very rewarding. Good benefits package. Opportunities for advancement, IF you make it through an entry level job, and company exists nationwide. For-profit education appears to be recession-proof (for now.) Innovation is important and recognized as key component to continuing success as a company.

Cons

The hours will absolutely kill you if you work in a busy center, unless you drink the Kool Aid early and don't look back. Because test preparation is often cyclical and tied to specific test dates, there are times of year when a seven day work week is de rigueur, and I have had many weeks where I put in forty hours by Wednesday. Hours can be somewhat flexible, but that's hardly relevant when you never get time off, even on weekends. This can last for months with little to no relief, as Kaplan is always understaffed. Burnout is common and open positions take months to fill because the pay is really not competitive with similar jobs. Very few people working in the home office have ever worked in the field and have little to no experience working with customers or understanding their needs or wants. Major initiatives are launched with no field testing or input. Kaplan does everything IT related inhouse, which is a disaster, and employees spend a lot of time fighting the technical systems that are supposed to help them do their jobs.

Pros

Kaplan is a great place to build skills early in your career, at least at the field level. Kaplan tends to hire young, which does mean turnover, but also means you can get your feet wet as a manager sooner than you would at other companies. After several years as a marketing manager for Kaplan, I was able to get interviews at other companies fairly quickly. The people I encountered at Kaplan were great almost across the board - intelligent and fun, almost entirely in the 22-35 year-old range. Generous time off policy (I had 3 weeks) and pretty good benefits too.

Cons

The downsides are: Schedule: Field employees work long hours and are expected to work weekends and evenings as needed. This typically wasn't too bad, but there were periods where I worked 3 Saturdays in a row and didn't get a different day of the week off. Working until 7pm is typical, and you can expect to be pretty busy for the majority of your day. On the flip side, you do have some flexibility throughout the week. Pay: i'm sure this has been covered in other reviews, but Kaplan pays under-market. I started as a Marketing Manager at $32K, yikes. Type of work: Marketing managers do a lot of substantial, higher-level work, but they're expected to also double as grassroots workhorses. It's not atypical to be asked to spend 10 hours of your week handing out fliers or putting up posters on a local college campus. This gets old real quick and made me feel under-utilized.

Pros

Kaplan is a great place for someone to build a resume and learn what it takes to run a business from management to operations to marketing to sales. Plus you are helping students, many of whom you can relate to, achieve their educational and career goals (or so says the mission statement.)

Cons

You will be paid squat - i have friends who work less hours than I do (60+) and make twice as much (at least.) They promise huge bonuses that are impossible to achieve, but its the typical stick and carrot show. Management changes its mind on a daily basis. They seem to have no idea what it is they are truly wanting to do. Many of their judgements are based upon emotional reactions instead of solid decision making. Most decisions are based upon a budget that is poorly created and funded. Growth is expected to be over 10% YOY while the budget is cut 20% YOY. there is very little support from the home office and all the operation process and systems are a joke. They make work harder to do than it needs to be. I'm not adverse to hard work, but you shouldn't have to work so hard to actually just do your job!
