      Top down culture strangles motivation

      Pros

      - HP legacy of metrics and process orientation - Talented and knowledgeable coworkers, even if old school - Decent pay and benefits

      Cons

      - Top heavy, top down culture to the point promoting an authoritarian culture - Undue emphasis on cost cutting at the expense of employees to ensure the executives never miss their bonus targets - Total compensation distributed more than 50% to top 200 in management, and rest to the 10,000+ workers - Majority of employee population is 50+ and old school

      Large Fairly Stable Company

      Pros

      Very large company so a diversity of opportunity. Fairly stable and decent benefits, although as with most corporations today, margins get thinner every year and employee's lose more. Regardless, this company will will be above average for most of the market for comparable jobs. Rich history stemming back to the companies roots with Hewlett Packard.

      Cons

      Despite efforts to implement more flexibility, company still has entrenched culture and is slow at times so to respond to change. This is a large company and your experience will vary greatly depending on your global location and whether you work as an engineer in R&D, a customer service rep in a call center or technician in a calibration center.
