Sephora at Kohl's

Pros

All the girls are very sweet and work as a team. Break room is pretty big, training is offered through the computer every week. Every month associates receive gratis (free) items ranging from travel size to full size so that we can test out the products ourselves at home and learn more about them. Every 30 hours worked I believe is equal to 2 hours of collected paid time off for part timers. Break room is the one that Kohl's offers, there's no separate break room for Sephora, but its nice to get to know the Kohls associates as well. Its a pretty big breakroom and sometimes Kohl's management will buy everyone food, especially for events like Christmas, new years. Associate discount is 15% and applies to Sephora at Kohl's (no free standing Sephora store) and towards any Kohl's items as well. During holidays, discounts are BIG for associates especially if you have the Beauty Insider reward program with Sephora.

Cons

Hours given are not the best, but of course that depends on your availability. It can get very busy, customers take a lot of your time with things so it requires a lot of patience and time management as there are things to be done other than helping and ringing out customers. Pay attention to the trainings as customers can be very specific with their concerns, often asking for a certain ingredient they need to avoid or are looking for. So it is important to know not just the brands but the items/ingredients themselves specifically. Some things (gift cards, returns) from main Sephora stores cannot be transferred to Kohl's Sephoras so it causes a lot of confusion and upset with the customers.

Pros

Very good environment to work in. Love my coworkers, and management staff, and most of the customers are amazing, however, you have the one bad customer here and there.

Cons

I have worked at Kohl's for 2 years now, and I have a total retail experience of 3 years, and I only make $10.10/hour. With the recent addition of Sephora to my store, they are being paid way more than me. I do know that they are being paid by Sephora standards, and I do understand that they need to know product knowledge and stuff like that, but I still think it is a little ridiculous the pay gap. The starting Sephora associate at Kohl's makes $15.00/hour. I have work at this company for over 2 years and have been an employee of the month 2 times, and the only reason I have not been it more times is that you can only be an employee of the month once per year. I think it is outrageous that a new employee at Sephora makes $5 more than me when I have been working 2 years longer than them at the same store.

Overtime you get burnt out

Pros

The friends you make along the way. The discount is nice. The dress code is nice, jeans and black tops.

Cons

The pay isn't enough for what you have to put up with. Customers are treated way better than associates. Managers play favorites and really don't treat people like equals. Regardless of your position, they are quick to throw you under the bus. You can move up in the company but only if you suck up. Hard work goes unnoticed. Everything is all about the charge card these days and pushing way to much to get people to open it. Managers well only work with your schedule if it fits into the stores schedule. Some managers will just hide in their office and not once come to the floor. And if it's their manager shift and they wanna stay in their office, they get upset that they are being bothered when they're pretty much doing nothing. No such thing as team work or communication with management. Those that have been with the company for long time are starting to look elsewhere. Our building has little A/C and heat working in the months we need them the most. Yes we're a LED certified store, but come on! Overtime, Kohl's hides your talents of doing the best to your abilities.
