Pros

Very warm, kind, and fun associates. These are some of the best people with which I have had the privilege to work. Balancing life and work is all right, so long as you are capable enough to contact fellow associates to cover you on your own, as they rarely take your availability into account during scheduling. And finally, I will say that while you may get annoyed at the store constantly bragging via the overhead speakers about its green initiatives, Kohl's as a company is very energy efficient and environmentally conscious.

Cons

They have meetings to let you know that they're "listening" to what you have to say. I have been a part of 4, and not ONCE did they actually take associate complaints into account. The weekly hours they give to store associates rank from mediocre (roughly 20) to abysmal (4). Communication is horrible between management and associates. My hours were slashed from 22 - 25 per week to 8. The reason I was given when I approached management was that my performance wasn't up to snuff and that only "the hardest working associates" get hours. I proceeded to ask the supervisors under which I worked whether they found my performance unsatisfactory. None of them had. In fact, many complimented me on my work ethic and knowledge about the store. Management in general is a joke. The only ones who are promoted (from within, as they like to brag) are the managers' favorites, regardless of actual work experience and capability. The entire store fosters an "in-and-out" mentality, where associates enter, work for a few months, and then move on because of the pitiful hours and the pathetic compensation. That way the company never has to pay more than minimum wage to any given associate, you see. Working within the store itself is a constant uphill battle. There are maybe two associates covering the entire store at any given time, forcing you to run around, constantly answering customer questions and searching for items on the floor and in the stockroom (both of which are very disorganized) between trying to accomplish tasks given to you by supervisors and management AND trying to keep your department from looking like a tornado passed through it. One can only praise the little victories for so long before they are overwhelmed by the big failures. Compensation was $0.02 above minimum wage, and I didn't know any normal associates who did not require another form of income in order to live outside of their parents' house. And let's not forget the credit card! Kohl's is essentially a credit card company which also happens to sell clothing. They require you to get a certain number of "credit apps" (applications for the credit card) every week, or your hours are slashed. It is embarrassing to be forced to ask, and depressing when you watch people who you KNOW can't afford it get the card, only to get themselves in debt.
