Pros

Worked there as a teenager. It was fine.

Cons

Worked there in 2016 when wages were bad, but I was a teenager so didn’t really care.

Pros

Great store level employees. Great regular customers that would motivate you to want to work hard to serve them.

Cons

Recently wasted over 5 years of my life in this job role. Things started off great - many promises made to me about how my career would take off by hitting certain metrics and exceeding expectations. Year 1 and 2 I did exactly that and more. I was explicitly told this job role was purely a stepping stone job towards an Assistant Store Manager role. My “training” in my first few months on the job was just filling in for another eCommerce manager at a store where about 3 different people had quit my job in the past 12 months. Despite this I stuck with it, worked long days - on salary for no additional pay - to meet any expectations thrown my way. I stuck with the job through the pandemic often working 6-7 day weeks 10-12 hours a day… again with no additional pay. In a desperate attempt to meet unreasonable expectations, I was in the building for 24+ hours straight a few times. The reward I got for this hard work - watching other people both outside the company and within my job role who objectively performed worse than me be promoted. It took me several years to wise up to the fact that my efforts were never going to be rewarded. The company will never, ever give you the necessary resources you need to be successful. They will not train you, they will belittle you every chance they get, and should you ever meet their high expectations- metrics which the company average is beneath - you will not be commended or rewarded in any way. Upper management is incapable of handing out a single compliment or even thanking you. Especially post 2020, they micro manage every second of your job to the point where I don’t even know why the word “management” was even in my job title. Several different division and district staff members had no problem at all degrading you or one of your employees directly in front of everyone else. The culture around Kroger is fundamentally broken and based in creating fear. You will simultaneously be expected to be a manager while also doing the work yourself. You will never, ever be given the staff you need to complete the work assigned to you and you must step in to simply survive everyday. I emailed several people about this once outlining the problems with their budgeting system and how it generates “earned hours” (using available metrics posted on our budgeting sites) - I was met with two upper management people trashing me through email, I guess not realizing they had left me copied on the email chain. This is about as unprofessional and unserious of a company as you can possibly work for. After I finally put in a notice, concluding almost 6 years in this role and 12 total with the company I heard… nothing. Absolutely nothing from anyone wanting to know why one of the longest tenured people in the eCommerce Manager job role and a 12 year employee wanted to leave. I never heard a word from *anyone* above my store level staff thanking me for my time and effort. What a joke. Do not fall for whatever this job is trying to sell you. Avoid. Like. The. Plague.
