      Pros

      Good place for scientists to do research.

      Cons

      HR department is so political and so much bureaucracy that if someone higher up within the department does not like you, u will not get promoted or even get let go for no apparent reasons.

      Pros

      Postdoc salary was good compared to other Bay Area options, definite prestige for your CV, great view from the top of the hill.

      Cons

      A shocking amount of back-stabbing and fighting between and among divisions. Claims to be collaborative but it's really the big fish who take all the credit. This probably varies depending on which division you are in. Tend to be locked into a project without much freedom or input. Many postdocs are glorified RAs. Safety culture is too extreme.

      Pros

      You get a fair bit of freedom, the campus is pretty, access to seminars and smart people

      Cons

      living on soft money is painful. In my field (applied energy sciences), the funders fund uninspiring work and micromanage projects. It's not LBNL's fault, but the whole environment stifles creativity.
