Learn new areas of science Collaborate with many different scientists from different fields Able to travel to many different science conferences

Cons

The pay can be a little low for the Berkeley area. Sometimes the hiring process can take a while, and permanent jobs come by infrequently.

-great benefits (postdocs joined UC postdocs union) -lab leadership promotes a culture that values diversity -brilliant colleagues and exciting work

Cons

-pay not competitive compared to Livermore and Brookhaven National labs, especially for the cost of living -job insecurity

Pros

Lots of technical freedom, scientific involvement, smart co-workers and reasonable work-life balance You can also be LGBT+, turn 30, 40, 50, 60+ and still be an essential part of the work and achievements.

Cons

More attention needs to be paid to engineers (support for scientists already exists aplenty) particularly wrt long-term support for sustainable software beyond project-level funding.
