Pros

Benefits, including pension. Some scientific environments are excellent.

Cons

Lack of diversity (absence of underrepresented minorities and women in scientific environments and senior leadership), creation of powerless committees to address lack of diversity while senior leadership continues to engage in self-replication). "Black box" decision making (little to no consultation with subordinates; little explanation of decisions). An odd, strikingly conservative management style, with far too many bureaucrats and bureaucratese. As other organizations flatten, LBL continues to favor steep hierarchy akin to the military. A real contrast to most university environments, with little humor and/or irony evident and a pronounced white male culture.

Pros

See the title of this review. Very nice retirement and medical benefits, although your salary will be less than in industry. However, there is a lot of flexibility with when you do your work and vacations are respected (and expected!)

Cons

Lower pay makes it hard to live in the bay area. LBL only have real career advancement for those with a Ph D. (maybe that's not wrong, just limiting for me at the moment.)

Pros

Networking; there were opportunities to meet diverse and open-minded professionals every week. Location; The location gorgeous and the proximity of the Lab to an urban center was also very convenient for day-to-day necessities. Work opportunity; There seemed to be countless opportunities to work on different projects (albeit not enough time to do so) HR; ergonomic solutions were very quick and easy to come by. Human Resources paid attention to and cared for employee needs.

Cons

The usual, when working in scientific research.
