Let's be real, it is difficult to live in the bay area with this salary. Half of mine is going to rent. But what's a government lab to do ? Very little opportunity for permanent positions. More minor issues: you have to deal with some standard government bureaucracy and the HR department is.... an HR department, so lower your expectations.

Pay is low. No advancement opportunities for women. Manager was not technically competent but was leading a technical department. It really hurt the initiatives at Berkeley Lab. DOE currently headed by Rick Perry, who unqualified for working in energy, science, or nuclear weapons. A lot of researchers were leaving for other non-U.S. research facilities. Many employees were looking for other opportunities as well because of Trump. Parking is terrible.
