Pros

Many nice and friendly people made the work environment enjoyable and the pay was fair for the area (but low compared to similar jobs in other cities). Benefits are very good. Take advantage of free YMCA memberships.

Cons

Little room for advancement and lack of recognition led me and others to feel as if we were going nowhere in the company.

No Communication for a communications company

Pros

One of the few set schedule, eight hour a day, forty hours per week workplaces in town... that is, if you're lucky enough to get an hourly job, there are only about 4 of them available in the entire building. Reporters, most of the advertising staff and all of the circulation staff are salaried employees so if you're unlucky enough to land one of those you'll be called in and asked to stay till all hours doing the job of at least 3 other people. Everyone does the job of at least 2 people, so you're never bored.

Cons

Everyone does the job of at least 2 people, so you're not only always busy but the higher ups are constantly asking you to do more and then wondering why your sales aren't being met. For a large corporation it's amazing that simple steps have not been taken in order to help the business run more smoothly. This doesn't even take into consideration the absolute lack of care for their customers. Rates are hiked up so much to compensate for the fact that print media is a dying industry and customers are forced into a digital subscription, something that wouldn't be so bad if this wasn't a borderline retirement community. These are short term solutions for a long term problem, something a great deal of newspapers are doing right now to try and save themselves.
