My experience working as an underwriter for two years was overwhelmingly negative. While the office environment appears visually appealing with its bright colors and there are plenty of fun happy hours and snacks available, these perks are merely a distraction from the company's deeply rooted issues.
The work environment is incredibly toxic. Despite advertising that promotions are available to everyone, they are actually given based on favoritism. My boss was openly hostile towards me, often being fake and condescending. She once labeled me as emotionally draining simply for bringing up real problems that she couldn’t solve. Her behavior was consistently inappropriate and unprofessional. She played favorites with certain employees who, despite being incompetent and causing the company to lose money, were constantly promoted and never faced any consequences for their poor performance.
The higher-ups are solely focused on climbing the corporate ladder and making more money, showing little regard for the well-being of their employees. They force frequent job changes and mandatory cross-training under the guise of being a startup, despite the company being in business for over six years. The pervasive racial discrimination is also a significant issue, with praise and opportunities skewed towards certain individuals while others are demeaned.
Moreover, the company is on the brink of bankruptcy, a fact that they seem to be ignoring in their quest for growth and profit. To make matters worse, there are instances of gross unprofessionalism among top managers.
In conclusion, this company is a terrible place to work. The toxic environment, biased promotions, racial discrimination, and unprofessional behavior from management make it a deeply unpleasant and damaging place to build a career. I would not recommend this company to anyone.
