Hard job and too little pay

Business Outlook

Pros

Training is good Can be rewarding sometimes Flexible hours except in summer

Cons

Very poor pay for the kind of work. Its hard to tutor special needs children and the pay should reflect that. Plenty of other jobs with similar pay and way easier work. Only pick this one if you must

Mixed Feelings

Pros

When you have someone who comes in and are unable to read a simple word like "pop" or "cat", it pulls at your heartstrings. BUT then after 3 months they can take a word like "reimagining" or "generosity" and read it as quickly as they can read their own name; that's when you know you've done something amazing. The feeling that you're changing someone's life and helping them achieve something that they previously believed that they couldn't do because of countless struggles and failures in the past? That's what makes this job so rewarding.

Cons

The schedule- it's inconsistent and a total mess if you need something stable. If you're looking for something part time to earn a little bit of income, this might be better suited for you. Some of the students can be extremely behavioral, to the point that you might be at risk of an actual injury. If the staff was trained to deal with these sort of situations, that would be fine. BUT most of the staff isn't. Support. Yes, you're mentored frequently throughout busy seasons but after that, it can feel like you're floundering trying to do everything on your own. Also, company -wide trainings seem like broken records after a while; same information, little to no help.
