When understaffed, you are expected to do the job of 3 people and are constantly presured. Managers get nervous easily and nag you on the radio to talk to the people that already told you they wont purchase that day. If one person calls out, everyone else in your team is screwed. And if you actually need to request days for family or personal reasons, don't expect for the requests to be granted. If they somehow do approve them, expect a talk meant to intimidate you from not requesting days off. Same with availability, even if you are only part time. People often come and go due to this issue.
