Feels like stepping back in time

Pros

Great work-life balance, hardly any expectations. Unlimited PTO.

Cons

For context, I am speaking from the Advertising side perspective… Everything about working here feels like stepping back in time. From the uninspiring, all-white corporate office decor to the people, overall, it’s an antiquated place. Expectations are very low to non-existent, so while you can coast by and receive praise, you learn nothing. “Digital” is still a buzzword here. You will work with some incompetent colleagues who have somehow been with the company for 20 years. And finally, raises are unheard of.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are sorry to hear about your experience and would encourage you to contact our HR department to discuss specific details that might be helpful to improve the employee experience. While the L.A. Times’ digital audience greatly surpasses its print audience, as you may know, print advertising remains more profitable than digital. The company has made significant investments in digital product development, engineering, data science and audience research, and has established its own CMS and direct-sold and programmatic ad programs. The company also includes a digital marketing agency, Stats Digital, which is successful in the digital marketing and advertising space. We’re sorry that you were underutilized in your time with the company – we certainly understand the importance of digital publishing and advertising, and are working toward a sustainable future for the L.A. Times.

Pros

Some great people to work with within certain team.

Cons

Leadership on the business side is very toxic, acting with favoritism with obvious "clicks" that are not based on business roles or performance. Lack of respect for individuals' good work. Praise incorrectly given in public ways to favored staff for other people's hard work and success when it serves to validate leadership's personal opinions. Mid-level leadership hired by management with zero experience or expertise in what the team is responsible for. Lack of transparency from management. The split between business and editorial is a mess - no one knows what's goin on, no synchronicity, no holistic vision. There is a constant feeling of treading water and wasting time due to pointless internal politics. Unless you've been there a long time, everyone is underpaid. My CEO rating is NOT for Kevin Merida, as he is on the Editorial side.
