Antiquated company with a weak workforce

Pros

The smallest efforts seem to be rewarded with a ton of praise, so it's a great place to slack off and get complimented for your "hard work." They match your 401K and have decent benefits. You barely work so you get to come in at 9:30 and leave at 5pm.

Cons

Stay far away from the advertising group/business side - it's full of people who have no idea about modern digital ad sales, the marketing universe, or anything really. If you're 50+ and learned your chops in the age of dinosaurs, you'll love it. Otherwise, expect change at a snail's pace (if at all), a totally backwards organization and some of the least intelligent people you've ever worked with. Good luck feeling fulfilled or making a meaningful impact. Also, the office is like jail - you walk through metal detectors/have your bags x-ray screened only to take an elevator up to your floor which is drab, white, no art on the walls, no culture or personality and honestly just horrible. It's the most soul-sucking corporate environment ever...unless you came from the finance world. This place belongs in the 1980s but it's somehow even worse. The company lost over $55M in 2019 and even more in 2020, let that be your sign.

Pros

There is a lot of opportunity and the majority of the staff is very helpful.

Cons

The best employees get overworked and take on the majority of the work, while there are a lot of senior level VPs and Directors that don't seem like they do much.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We agree that there’s a lot of opportunity at our company and we continue working to create an environment and process for supporting each employee’s career development. As part of that, we are rolling out a feature that will help managers by soliciting feedback from direct reports and other colleagues and also training to encourage them to communicate more about what they do on a day-to-day basis. We appreciate everything you do for us and look forward to working hard to make California Times the best place possible to work and build a career.
