Great Culture, Slow Moving

Pros

The culture at MEMIC is great. Overall, people are nice and goal-oriented. The company tries its best at maintaining its cultural values through its rapid growth. There are somewhat frequent after work events, and in the summer you can catch large groups of employees from various departments enjoying happy hour on Portland's waterfront. The Portland office has brand new equipment and workstations (sit stand desks). The place looks clean and hip. There's an on-site gym and locker room. Every floor has a kitchenette. There's a large training room. The company really values talent and will promote talent. HR department is improving with the growth and looking to establish ways to bring in top talent. The IT department is going through a major transition (you can see that by some of the reviews here) so there are headaches there. Some people don't like change, but some of the criticisms are valid.

Cons

The company is only 25 years old, so there's a lot of the "old guard" remaining. While we are growing at a rapid rate, a lot of the new ideas are rooted in its past ideology. So change can be difficult. As with any company, it’s hard for mid-level managers and individual contributors to stand up against senior management's "bad ideas" without seeming difficult or not being a team player. You can negatively impact your career by being too outspoken with some members of senior management. However, we have a new CEO that's a collaborator and person-of-the-people, and he's putting feelers out there - there's a good chance this old guard will have to learn new tricks. When in meetings with senior management, many will be on their phones or laptops checking text messages and emails, hardly paying attention. There's a need to be constantly connected, but it sends the message to staff that they are not important and it disrespects their time. The pay is OK and it's pretty competitive in the Maine insurance industry, but it has to be considering it's a monoline carrier. The benefits overall are just OK. They offer a fantastic 401k program but there's a 3+ year vesting period, so it's only as good as your commitment to stay. They offer great PTO, but its accrued and its flexibility entirely dependent on your manager. There's an expensive high ded health plan. They subsidize parking, but it could be a hike to the office. The work-life balance is questionable at best. For example, there were calls for more work life balance to curb burnout, instead of instituting a work-from-home program or flex-time, they bought a nap pod so you can nap if you need to. Just a bit out of touch with the current national trend toward work-life balance. Nevertheless, there are some positions that offer various starting and ending times, but they are rigid in their structure. Overall, I've had a positive experience and would recommend this company to anyone.

Thank you for your review. We are happy to hear that you enjoy working at MEMIC. This summer we hosted weekly Ice Cream Socials. We hope you were able to attend a few and meet some new people. We’re also working on other strategies to increase cross-department activities and projects.

Terrible management in IT

Pros

redesigned offices; very modern and pleasant (but zero privacy)

Cons

Most programmers have left. Management has zero experience managing programmers and it shows. Not interested in motivating people at all. Management jokes about employees behind their backs and encourages an atmosphere of favoritism and back stabbing. Toxic.

First, our apologies for a late response on this review. Nearly two years ago, MEMIC undertook a major restructuring of our IT department while also implementing a new operating system. While there were challenges, under new department leadership, the team succeeded in delivering a system for which we are grateful. As we move forward, we are using the lessons of that experience to apply to our next major project and are hiring more talent to share the work. In addition, we are beginning to implement suggested changes expressed in a recently completed employee engagement survey. We are intent on living up to our recent designation by ACORD as “the top workers’ compensation company in the U.S.” That includes strong employee satisfaction.
