Great college environment with a lots of diversity. Close to transportation and the city. Competitive salaries.

Cons

Non support staff get paid once per month. Time off and continuing education benefits are not as good as neighboring universities . May be difficult to navigate such a wide spread campus

Pros

MIT is famous for innovation and technology and this permeates the work environment. The buildings, students and school culture all contribute to an exciting buzz in the air during the workday. The pay scale is reasonable, the benefits are excellent and there is room for advancement if you are interested in a career in higher ed. Many departments have switched to flex location and flex hours, so you can maintain work life balance.

Cons

Many of the staff, particularly support staff, are holdovers from the old school of office administration. There is reluctance to embrace new technology and an overall sense that you are working for anywhere but a top ranked science and tech school. There is room to advance and move within the university, but doing so requires that you personally invest in moving up and on. Your department will not likely have a clear path to advancement and most are more than willing to let talented staff languish in jobs that they are too skilled for.
