Pros

Direct management chain is great. Enjoy the pace of work at a site. Some government sponsors are amazing individuals to work with and support!

Cons

Large focus on hiring external vs internally promoting people of equal skillsets. There’s often a sense of “intellectual superiority” among individuals that gets pitted against others in a negative fashion, so much so that it blocks non-masters and PhD holding folks from advancement and recognition of impactful work. Certainly feels like a bro culture with lack of respect for others. I often-times find myself at my wits end, fed up with the disrespectful, clique-ish shenanigans of coworkers. Diversity of opinion is not valued here; in fact, good luck getting most coworkers to set aside their ego and actually listen to the ideas of others. Most sponsor work is unfulfilling, and lacks the appropriate rigor to be effective, and Impactful. The dynamic of MITRE vs Aerospace vs Contractors is ridiculous and unprofessional, I’ve never been disrespected in that manner by non-MITRE professionals before. Pay is low, promotion potential non-existent but always dangled in front of you, forget getting a raise that keeps up with inflation and cost of living.

Pros

As a non-profit focused on solving technical problems for sponsor missions, there is a strong sense of purpose in much of the tasking. There are still many competent people who are wonderful to collaborate with.

Cons

The current CEO Jason Providakes has established a dangerous culture of senior management (primarily the VPs, though also several Directors) which focuses primarily on agreeing with and pleasing their supervisor rather than building / retaining a high quality workforce and work program. Abrupt policy decisions are made by the CEO without adequate consideration, and have resulted in financial problems (e.g., officer-driven initiatives losing millions of dollars, suddenly becoming aware of over-burning the overhead budget at the last minute and saying "running a company is hard", and reducing benefits such as vacation time). In addition to making bad decisions, they are communicated poorly, with a tone of disdain for employees. Senior leadership is often caught off guard when the CEO announces these changes. Sponsors have indicated they see a reduction in technical competence, and long-time employees note the significant loss of talent from the company as a result of the new officer culture and their decisions. Employees are held to a high standard of significantly or exceptionally exceeding expectations and meeting goals to earn a raise, yet the CEO and many VPs are clearly failing to meet their stated goals but are rewarded with large raises and promotions.

Pros

My coworkers are easy to get along with and are knowledgeable. The work is meaningful, and you feel like you are actually making a difference.

Cons

The CEO and C suite are out of touch. They stated that if you want to make money to leave MITRE. Instead of listening, they deflect. They hide behind belief systems and correlations instead of presenting actual data and statistics. Candid feedback to them is met with deflection and anger. Morale is at an all time low.
