Pros

My scientist and engineer fellow workers are dedicated people.

Cons

The MITRE organization is not well structured and managed. We lack key capable people to meet our sponsor needs and many positions are filled by eager and confident people who lack the knowledge to help our customers' project to improve performance, just look at MITRE's past participation in various boards, committees, and projects; there were no significant impact in process nor results, but we keep our mouth shut because this is a VERY political cut-throat and profit-oriented company.

Thanks for sharing your perspective. We’re sorry to hear that you are currently unhappy working at MITRE. We're proud that our team combines first-rate technical and organizational skills with a strategic understanding of our sponsors' needs. We also pride ourselves on fostering an environment that supports wide-ranging thinking with a practical bent. We've helped our sponsors advance the state of the art in critical areas including GPS, air traffic control, mobile technologies, cybersecurity, and healthcare IT. We're proud of this record of teamwork and accomplishment. Our sponsors regularly tell us they are happy with the value we add and the contributions we make to their missions. Their satisfaction has allowed us to become one of the largest operators of federally funded research and development centers in the United States. We are proud to have many employees who recommend working at MITRE to their friends and family – over half of our hires come through employee referrals. We suggest that you reach out to an HR representative to discuss your discontent with management.

Pros

Work-Life Balance is taken seriously and supported across the organization. People are encouraged to pursue their personal and professional goals almost equally. Paid time off is granted for some civic duties such as being a museum docent or election worker. Working from home and flexible scheduling make child care challenges easy to manage.

Cons

Low staff and management turnover limits promotion and growth opportunities. The company is growing strongly but in many diverse areas. If you're employed in a fairly stable work area it's difficult to find promotions in your area. This forces others to either develop new skills in unrelated areas to pursue advancement or stay put and hope for the best. Since many of the areas of MITRE are mutually exclusive, it can be hard to transfer into growth areas. For example, an expert in artifiicial intelligence would have difficulty becoming a network engineer.
