Comfortable Place to Work
Pros
I have been working at MITRE for over a year now and have had a very positive experience. The management and employees truly care about colleagues. People care about your well-being, your personal life, and how you are doing overall. You feel like you are being cared for. Also, MITRE recognizes and honors hard work. If you go above and beyond the scope of your role (lead tasks, organize department events, volunteer for new projects etc.) you will be recognized and praised. I've seen reviews that it's "hard to get promoted" at MITRE, but I would disagree. Everyone is smart and technical at MITRE, so how it's been explained to me is that if you want to get promoted or a raise you need to demonstrate above and beyond, not just the role expectations that all MITRE employees are able to execute. Pros: - Best educational assistance program I've seen in industry (up to $28,000 per year) with the expectation to stay at the company for 2 years after receiving education benefits (If you leave early, you pay back 100%) - 40 hours paid civic time each year (40 hours paid volunteer work!) - Retirement matching program that equates to 10% matching (yes, 10% is not a typo!) - EXTREMELY flexible working hours and schedule - Rarely work over 40 hours a week - Great salary for the work expectations (40 hours/week) - Paid paternity leave given to both mothers and fathers (~12 weeks) - Good mission and values - MITRE's mission is to create a safer world. Their work abides by that mission, as well as their workplace. - Great workplace environment - all employees are treated with equal - Great work/life balance - work schedule allows for flexibility during the day (ex. if you have an afternoon appointment, work more that evening or more the next day to make up for hours missed) Overall, I've found MITRE a great place to work. I'm supported to pursue passions and projects that align with my career goals and interests. I describe MITRE as a federal consultant, without consultant hours (although technically we are not consultants - that is the best way to describe the work.) A recruiter once told me that they had an employee leave for Deloitte (for more pay) and then return to MITRE after 6 weeks. Despite having to take a slight pay cut to return to MITRE, it was well-worth the work/life balance and the high-quality employer environment.
Cons
As an early professional (4 years out of school), despite my senior title and high competency, I often find myself doing the "busy work" or "boring work." It is work that has to be done, but I find myself over qualified and overpaid for some work. I'm hopping for more management and strategic roles as I continue at MITRE. Also, as a early career professional, I'm often the youngest on the team by 10-20 years. This sometimes causes generational issues (older, more experienced professionals not providing as much autonomy on tasks), however MITRE has done a good job at offering workshops to hep minimize. ADVICE TO READER: If you are at a place in your career where you want to hustle, work 50+ hours per week, and grow extremely fast in your career, this isn't the place for you. But, if you are looking for an employer that pays well, a 40-hour work week, and flexible schedule - this is an amazing environment and employer.
