Too much overhead

Pros

If you drink the Mitre kool-aid and are lucky enough to be assigned to the really interesting projects then it can be an amazing place to progress in your career. Good retirement plan, decent benefits. Work life balance is cool.

Cons

Often feels like request are not being heard by management. I've asked multiple times for work that aligns with my job title (read: what i was hired to do) and it has gone ignored. There is a very bleak outlook for the company since younger hires are realizing they can do more interesting work for better pay and better culture than at Mitre. People (including myself) are jumping ship, rightfully so since there is very little reason to stay.

Meh

Pros

Pockets of excellence in certain highly technical areas in engineering amid a sea of mediocrity. Nice buildings, benefits, MIT cachet from long long ago. MITRE Institute learning opportunities. Flexible work schedule but only in certain departments.

Cons

Dimming former offshoot of Lincoln Labs. Overmanaged inverted pyramid. Lots of byzantine intrigue. Poor execution of its matrix management. Don't be on the bench for long or it is sayonara Tokyo. If you get in good with someone up the chain you may be promoted. Promotions are not due to technical ability. Hiring and firing many times not thought through by managers who are over their heads. An overall atmosphere of gradual decline.

Pros

Working in the public interest not making a buck. Focus on high quality. Making a difference. A place to grow. Great technical work. Some managers.

Cons

The new CEO is changing the culture but not being open to even senior management about his intent. Management is largely incompetent, not trained, and not recognized for management only their technical skills.
