Pros

MITRE offers a unique chance to make a meaningful difference in shaping government initiatives, from strategic direction to technical solutions. The organization is home to exceptionally talented colleagues who bring dedication and creativity to their work. The resources, tools, and facilities are impressive, and MITRE’s commitment to a balanced work-life environment remains strong. While pay and benefits are competitive, rising inflation and market shifts have made compensation an area where MITRE could continue to review and ensure alignment with industry standards. Even during challenging times under previous leadership, MITRE’s core values and mission kept it a fulfilling place to work. With the new president making thoughtful adjustments that reflect a renewed respect for the technical staff, there is a shared sense of optimism about MITRE’s future.

Cons

MITRE’s leadership culture faces some challenges, particularly when it comes to fully engaging with and recognizing the expertise of its technical staff. Sponsors frequently place their confidence in the technical teams, who have earned trust and rapport through their specialized skills and dedication. However, there is sometimes a sense of disconnect from senior leaders, which may lead to an underappreciation of the unique insights technical staff bring. Strengthening this connection could greatly enhance the positive relationships MITRE has built with its sponsors. Additionally, MITRE has an opportunity to reflect on how it balances standards of technical depth and fosters an environment that respects, empowers, and includes all of its experts. Embracing divergent thought and creating space for fresh ideas would encourage the kind of innovation that MITRE is known for. By prioritizing this alignment, MITRE can continue to distinguish itself through the depth of its technical knowledge and the quality of its impact.

RTO ridiculous

Pros

New CEO who seems like to talks to him employees, opposed to prior CTO who just talked

Cons

RTO is my reason for leaving. I am within a 50 mile radius of an office (MITRE policy requirement for being hybrid) yet at this site I work with NO ONE. Nonetheless I am required to swipe my badge 50% of days worked in a week. The commute is 2 hours and it just makes no sense and is impacting my productivity and mental health. At what point do I call myself a whistleblower and question if this badge swipe policy a way for MITRE to charge a higher rate for a hybrid worker than a teleworker?

Pros

Pay is excellent (although the common wisdom is that the pay is higher at for-profit entities in the community like Meta and Amazon). Benefits reasonable for the region.

Cons

MITRE has been in a period of transition and uncertainty since before the pandemic. Cost-saving measures have lowered morale. Federal sponsors are not as supportive and enthusiastic as they were historically. Very few opportunities to pursue high-level executive positions for non-engineers such as legal, policy, and business process specialists. Diversity and Inclusion efforts are largely perfunctory and designed to maintain the status quo, but I find this to be true about most corporate employers.
