Pros
If you want to work with some of the best technical minds out there, MITRE is the place. If you want to further your education by obtaining a PhD, work a broad swath of technologies, and keep extending the bleeding edge, MITRE is the place.
Cons
The only downside is that MITRE's main customer, the US Government, can move at a glacial pace at times. Sometimes it can take years from conception to design to deployment. Some geographic areas in which your projects may be tested or deployed can be a bit less than "idyllic".
