      Good company but best days are in the past

      Pros

      Good pay and benefits with a work-life balance that is better than most. The company does invest in its infrastructure and its internal websites allow employees to help themselves to making collaboration connections and find interesting work.

      Cons

      Directors and officers have lost their way and lack credibility with the workforce. They've transformed the company from one that sought to work in the public's interest with a strong ethical compass to one that chased after arbitrary officer initiatives that seem more aligned to officer career growth than aiding the sponsor. Sponsors seem content to allow this and maintain a hands off approach to checking the MITRE claims of impact, even when evidence is that the help was marginally impactful at best

      Slow work, your skills will atrophy

      Pros

      Work life balance is good. When I was there, there was not that much pressure to deliver, but this can also be a con because your skills and career development will flatline.

      Cons

      Promotions are largely dependent on tenure and playing politics and not so much on your skills and impact. Because of this, the incentives are not there for people to work hard. There are many many people who are merely coasting and contributing the absolute minimum to their project; essentially only speaking up in meetings when they are addressed and doing the minimal work necessary to get by. For anyone somewhat ambitious in their career, this atmosphere is stifling and extremely painful. Even though I did not have much work week-to-week, I was very burned out when I left as I had lost all interest for my work. Although there are smart people at MITRE, on average, the intelligence and drive of the average employees is nowhere close to those in Big Tech. This may be a good place if you have a family and/or close to retiring but I would not recommend it for someone starting off in their career, unless they have no other options.

      Atrocious management ruins what is otherwise a positive work environment

      Pros

      Many smart employees committed to public service, great IT infrastructure and physical plant, good opportunities for professional development.

      Cons

      Poor managers promoted into positions of authority, creating a highly negative work environment. The result is that talented and committed staff leave to seek employment elsewhere.
