Pros

MITRE treats its employees very well in terms of benefits. There is great career development, and typically a nice working environment. Salary is generally good and comparable to the market, and work-life balance is the best around.

Cons

In my experience, MITRE struggled to provide quality work. A few quality projects (which are actually useful) are financing an incredible amount of complete nonsense across the company. It has 20-30 times the number of employees it needs; every project has too many cooks in the kitchen. The culture is one of faking it; very little cutting edge or interesting work is done, yet all projects are somehow framed as successes. It's internal research program is a complete disaster and a sad use of tax-payer money. Models and prototypes are often built for absolutely no reason. MITRE occupies an important space in between the government and contractors, but this former employee is giving it an efficiency rating of 10%. And with your taxpayer money, you should be concerned.

Pros

MITRE used to have a great training program for full-time employees but a few years ago the actual allotments of time provided to take classes was greatly reduced. Now if you want training (i.e. software engineering, big data analytics, machine learning, etc.) that requires more than 2 days (and most of those classes do), you have to use your vacation time.

Cons

Be very careful of doing commendable work if you are mid level. People higher up the food chain will steal your work and call it their own. This place is very much a Hobbesian experience.

Pros

For a government contractor, MITRE's buildings and work area is very modern and clean that covers a large campus area in expensive Boston area. Many serious looking mature and older folks walking around and attending meetings. There seems to be a lot of resources floating around. Talkative and friendly workers. A diverse of people who's previous career was with federal agencies and willing to spend time chat and tell stories.

Cons

I have years of working experience with technology start up companies. The speed of development was exhilarating. At this contractor shop, many of my co-workers are not technical (without engineering degree training) and many managers' resume (their resumes are online) include graduate degrees that are useless for technical work. My old companies have less than 20 percent managers to engineers ratio, here at MITRE it is reversed. That's a lot of overhead money wasted. The speed of technical project is very slow, old, and drags on and on... At least I have technical skills and formal education to start (for now), I really don't think I can be excited in this type of older organizations.
